39 MORE DAYS OF GULF RED SNAPPER!
Date posted: June 15, 2017
HIGHLY UNUSUAL. QUITE WELCOME.
Late last night, the Department of Commerce announced that the recreational Gulf red snapper season will reopen for 39 additional days.
For the first time in a decade, Federal authorities and the five Gulf States have agreed to align Federal and State private angler red snapper fishing seasons for the remainder of the summer, and the Department of Commerce has re-opened the 2017 private angler recreational season for 39 weekend days and holidays. Majority Whip Scalise and other Members of Congress were instrumental in reaching this agreement. – DOC press release 6-14-17
Secretary Ross respectfully offered Representative Scalise and the other shooting victims best wishes for a speedy recovery. Many anglers echo those wishes.
The Press Release praises the cooperation between the Department of Commerce and the five Gulf State Fisheries Directors.
The 39 additional days are as follows:
Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays
-June 16 through September 4 (That is 12 three-day weekends)
+July 3 and 4 (Monday and Tuesday)
+September 4 (Monday, which is Labor Day)
Oddly, there is no mention of the National Marine Fisheries Service in this press release.
The State Directors worked hard to make this happen. Many anglers are grateful for the efforts and delighted with the results.
The anglers and the Gulf States will benefit greatly from the restoration of our rightful access to an abundant fishery. The economic impact will be exceptional and the social impact will be valuable beyond all method of measure. Time to gear up and plan those trips!
Many organizations played a part in this effort. The FRA has advocated for the restoration of red snapper opportunities since its founding.
