Gulf Public Hearings on Hogfish May 9, 10, 11
Date posted: May 5, 2016
If you target hogfish, you should show up at this meeting. Biologically, the Hogfish minimum size should be increased. Consider giving input that supports a 14″ minimum size. The reason being that the fishery has been at 12 inch minimum for years and shows no signs of overfishing or being overfished.
Th Council will make this and other decisions in June at a Clearwater Beach hotel. Mark your calendar for June 22, when you can speak to the full Council in one room. Meeting details to follow.
Watch for further details regarding information you might need for this public input.
The following is from the Gulf Council. See you there!
Public Hearings- Hogfish Annual Catch Limit
The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council has scheduled two public hearings
and one public webinar to take public comments on Reef Fish Amendment 43 (Hogfish).
This amendment considers setting a management boundary between the west Florida
stock of hogfish, which is located entirely in the Gulf of Mexico jurisdiction, and the east
Florida/Florida Keys stock, which occurs primarily in the south Atlantic but extends
partially into the Gulf Council’s jurisdiction in the Florida Keys.
The draft amendment also looks at defining overfished and overfishing thresholds, setting an annual catch
limit and increasing both the commercial and recreational minimum size limit for
hogfish. The Council has selected a preferred alternative that would raise the minimum
size limit of hogfish to 16 inches fork length.
